En bestående öppning mellan förmaken kallas förmaksseptumdefekt (ASD). En bestående öppning mellan hjärtkamrarna kallas kammarseptumdefekt (VSD). Både ASD och VSD kan om nödvändigt slutas med operation. Ostium Primum ASD is easily diagnosed in fetal echocardiography, while secundum ASD is virtually impossible to diagnose prenatally due to physiologically open vieussens valve through foramen ovale in fetus. Another subtype of partial ASVD is an inlet VSD. Different types of atrial septal defects can occur, and they are classified according to where in the separating wall they are found.

2019-07-18 · The ostium secundum defect is the most common type of ASD, accounting for more than 75 % and up to 90 % of all cases, with defect positioned in fossa ovalis (middle part of interatrial septum). Usually, ASD is in form of a single defect but there have been reported cases of fenestrated defects. Rarely, ostium secundum ASDs are familial and may occur through multiple generations. 9–12 Perhaps the best known example of familial inheritance of ASD is the Holt-Oram syndrome.

Children are rarely symptomatic, but long-term complications after age 20 years include pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and atrial arrhythmias. Secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), located in the central part of the atrial septum within the floor of the fossa ovalis, is the most common type of ASD. It is a shunt between the systemic and pulmonary circulations.

It is the most common form of atrial septal defect.

ASDs are classified by their different location and development: Secundum ASD occurs in the middle part of the atrial septum. Primum ASD occurs in the lower part of the atrial septum close to the tricuspid and mitral valves. Sinus venosis occurs in the upper part of the atrial septum near the veins that drain into the right and left atrium.

Secundum atrial septal defects are an opening in the middle part of the atrial septum. These are the most common type of atrial septal defect and they occur when a part of the atrial septum does not close when the heart is developing. Atrial septal defect (ASD) is the second most common congenital heart defect after ventricular septal defects (VSDs) and the most common to become symptomatic in adulthood. They are characterized by an abnormal opening in the atrial septum allowing communication between the right and left atria. Understanding atrial septal communications requires comprehension of the underlying development and anatomy of the IAS.13The atrial septum has three components: the septum primum, septum secundum, and atrioventricular (AV) canal septum. Secundum ASD o 50-70% of ASDs o Isolated defect o Twice as common in females o Simple mid-septum ASD Secundum ASD, same hole as PFO but hole is not covered by septum secundum Hole too big or septum secundum insufficient Results from arrested growth of secundum septum or excessive absorption of primum septum Ostium secundum ASD's appear as a larger than expected area of dropout in the central portion of the septum secundum (in the vicinity of the foramen ovale) or as a deficient foraminal flap (septum primum) that fails to cover the entire foramen ovale.
